Lo que Nietzsche sintió al teclear sus palabras sobre el papel sujeto en su máquina de escribir - que las herramientas que usamos para escribir, leer y manipular la información trabajan nuestra mente tanto como nuestra mente trabaja con ellas- es un tema clave de nuestra historia intelectual y cultural. Como ejemplifican las historias del mapa y el reloj mecánico, las tecnologías intelectuales, cuando alcanzan un uso generalizado, a menudo fomentan formas de pensar o extienden a la población en general formas establecidas de pensamiento que antes se habían limitado a una pequeña élite. Toda tecnología intelectual, por decirlo de otra manera, encarna una ética intelectual. Un conjunto de supuestos acerca de cómo funciona o debería funcionar la mente humana.

Cuando un obrero que se dedica a cavar zanjas cambia su pala con una excavadora, los músculos de su brazo se debilitan por más que él multiplique su eficiencia. Un intercambio muy similar a éste podría estar llevándose a cabo cuando automatizamos el trabajo de la mente.
